ST477: Small-Scale Solar Energy Steam Turbine Generator For Low-Cost Rural Electricity Generation

AFDHAL ASHRAF TAN BIN AMIN HUSAINI TAN Faculty Of Electrical Engineering & Technology

To address the need for affordable renewable energy in offgrid areas, this project developed a prototype solar thermal generator using a parabolic concentrator and a Pelton turbine. The system converts solar radiation into steam, reaching operational parameters of 151°C and 2.5 bar. Although initial electrical output was modest (0.18 W), the study confirms the viability of a simplified solar-to-steam-toelectricity pathway. Key performance barriers were identified as steam volume and thermal efficiency. The research concludes that with optimized geometry and IoT-integrated tracking, this low-cost model offers a promising foundation for scalable rural power solutions.
