SARA NISA BINTI FAKARUDIN LABUAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
Our initial survey showed that secondary students have trouble in Chemistry because of the Periodic Table. Based on our initial survey, 71.8% of students stated that they struggle in Science classes. Besides, 75.2% of students need help understanding the Periodic Table. According to Dr. Teoh Tek Jiun, Orthopaedic Specialist from Hospital Labuan, he stated that Periodic Table is very hard to memorise since each element consists of the element's name, symbol, atomic number, and atomic weight. Thus, we innovated a Periodic Pair Up (PPU): It is an innovative approach to assist secondary students' understanding of the Periodic Table in Chemistry. Mental imagery is an effective study method. It means our brain likes pictures more than words, which makes visual memory techniques more easy to understand. So we decided to put pictures of an item that has an element in it. Therefore, putting in common facts and images from everyday life helps the students quickly understand the elements. Based on our pre-test, most students scored lower than 40%. We then did an intervention with PPU and conducted a post-test to compare the marks. Results showed that after the post-test was conducted, the students' understanding of the Periodic Table increased significantly. Moreover, they all had fun playing studying and understanding together with the help of PPU. It is hoped that PPU will be modified to cater other subjects in the future.
