SENSE-BRIDGE: SENSORY DIET FLASHCARD
KPJ HEALTHCARE UNIVERSITY
Data from national records show that the number of children diagnosed with autism in Malaysia increased by about 663% from 2013 to 2023. Children with autism often experience sensory processing challenges such as sensory sensitivity or sensory seeking, which can disrupt daily routines and transitions. These difficulties may lead to distress, reduced participation, and increased stress for both children and caregivers. Although sensory strategies are commonly recommended in occupational therapy, many parents find it difficult to apply them consistently at home. Limited guidance and challenges integrating sensory activities into everyday routines often create a gap between therapy sessions and real-life practice. To address this, we developed an OT-guided Sensory Flashcard System designed to support sensory regulation within daily routines. The system combines sensory flashcards, a routine board, and a simple parent guide to help families implement sensory activities safely and consistently at home. By embedding sensory strategies into familiar routines using a First–Then approach, the system promotes smoother transitions, improved regulation, and better therapy carryover for children with autism.
