Abstract
Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can lead to various skin problems, including sunburn, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Although commercial sunscreens are widely used, many contain synthetic chemicals that may cause skin irritation and negatively impact marine ecosystems. This report presents an innovation: a natural sunscreen balm formulated using rice bran oil and coconut oil as the main active ingredients. The objective of this innovation is to produce an eco-friendly, safe, and affordable sunscreen alternative while enhancing awareness of sustainable, natural-based products. The formulation utilizes rice bran oil, rich in γ-oryzanol and antioxidants, and coconut oil, which provides moisturization and mild UV protection. Additional ingredients such as beeswax and shea butter improve product stability, texture, and skin nourishment, while zinc oxide is optionally included to enhance sun protection. The balm is produced using a simple double-boiler method and stored in user-friendly containers for easy application. Preliminary usage results indicate that the product provides moderate sun protection, effective moisturization, and causes no skin irritation. This innovation is free from harmful synthetic chemicals, reef-safe, low-cost, and suitable for individuals with sensitive skin. It also serves as a practical teaching and learning tool by demonstrating real-life applications of chemistry concepts. Despite limitations such as lower SPF compared to commercial products, the Natural Sunscreen Balm shows strong potential for further development and commercialization in the organic skincare industry. Overall, this innovation highlights the integration of science, environmental sustainability, and health-conscious product development.
