ST120: HEAR ME

AHMAD NADZMI BIN MOHD FAUZI POLITEKNIK TUANKU SYED SIRAJUDDIN

Hear Me was developed to bridge this gap between deaf and hearing communities. The mobile application offers three core features, which are speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and emergency SMS. The speech-to-text function converts spoken words into readable text in real time, allowing deaf users to follow conversations as they happen. The text-to-speech feature lets deaf users type their responses, which are then spoken aloud through an AI-generated voice, making two-way communication smooth and natural.

Additionally, the emergency SMS function allows users to instantly send preset messages to emergency services or personal contacts, ensuring they can get help quickly in urgent situations. Together, these features enable deaf users to engage in everyday conversations and handle emergencies without depending on others. The development of Hear Me benefited greatly from collaboration with Persatuan Orang Pekak Kedah (Kedah Deaf Association), whose members shared valuable insights about the real communication barriers experienced by the deaf community. Their input ensured the app addresses real-world user needs and emphasizes practicality and inclusivity.

By integrating voice recognition, natural language processing, and mobile communication tools into one accessible platform, Hear Me promotes independence, enriches daily interactions, and enhances emergency preparedness for deaf individuals. More than just a technological solution, it represents a collaborative effort toward greater inclusivity, safety, and equality for the deaf community in both everyday life and critical situations.
