ST573: Smart Room Booking System

GOH WEI CUN Universiti Teknologi Malaysia

An intelligent equipment management system aims to minimize waste and ensure efficiency in completing tasks. With that, we have decided to build a smart room booking system in response to problems found in the existing systems. From interviews with facility admins in UTM, the underlying problems include: double booking of rooms, communication delay between users and repetitive manual effort required to manage rooms. Hence, the envisioned final product will allow room-users to book rooms and enable admins to monitor the usage and status of facilities/rooms. To achieve this, the group’s proposed smart room booking system will integrate Internet-of-Things (IOT) technology to convenience both users and admins by automating the booking process. The system comprises an ESP32 microcontroller interfaced with a touch screen display, and a 4-way relay to control any electrical peripherals. Besides hardware integration, much effort was put into software development for easy access to hardware across the Internet. Thus, admins are able to monitor and control the usage of rooms remotely while users are able to make bookings and check room availability online. This project is a showcase of the group’s skills in tackling hardware and software development, as well as creating a custom PCB and 3D-modeled enclosure for the system.
